Established
The Rowing Club of the University of Hong Kong is the oldest university boat club in Hong Kong. It began as the Student Rowing Club in 1987, led by two professors in the faculties of Dentistry and Biochemistry, Medicine - Dr. Eric Carter and Dr. Tom Boyde.
HKU Rowing Club was formally established in 1981 by a group of dental students.
Before the Shatin Rowing Centre was built in 1985, its activity was based off the shores of Sandy Bay, Pok Fu Lam.

Asian Games
The first HKG team competing in the 1982 Asian Games in New Delhi in India were comprised of HKU Rowing Team members.
The First Intervarsity Race
The first Hong Kong Intervarsity Rowing Championship was held in 1987 with CUHK Rowing Team, paying tribute to the Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge.
In the early days, the course was 5000m long, until land reclamation at Ma On Shan limited the course to the current 3300m.

Mr. Chris Perry (Head Coach of HKG Rowing) taught HKU students the basics of rowing on a Model A Ergometer in the now demolished Linsey Ride Sports Centre on HKU Campus.
